Prebiotic, that is, it has the ability to aid the development of the right bacterial flora in the large intestine.
Reported research results indicate that prebiotics are not subject to enzyme digestion in the upper part of the gastroenteric tract (stomach and soft intestine) and they arrive in the caecum with their structure unchanged. However, there are no traces of them in the faeces which suggests that they are broken down by intestinal bacterial flora into a mixture of short chain fatty acids (acetic, propionic and butyrric), L-lactose, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
These have a noticeably stimulating effect on the proliferation of Biphidobacteria and Lactobacilli (bacteria which help us stay healthy) and they prevent those which are anaerobic, in particular Clostridium perfringens, and other pathogenic bacteria like Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Listeria and Shigella. They also tend to reduce blood cholesterol and glycemia.
They reduce the risk of colon-rectal cancer and the absorption of nitrogen, thus reducing the nitrogen waste which has to be eliminated by the kidneys. They also have a very low caries producing effect on the teeth. Recent research has shown that inulin and FOS increase the levels of butyrric acid in the large intestine and it is known that this substance works as protection against inflammatory diseases and tumours of the colon.
It is thought that a daily dose of this prebiotic fibre of between 2 and 6 g. ensures the good health of the large intestine.
None worthy of note. Sometimes consumption of this fibre can cause meteorism (gas). It can be used during pregnancy, while breast-feeding and for children over the age of 1.
