Constipation represents an increasingly common problem, not only in the adults but also in children. The main causes consist in an unhealthy diet and a lack of adequate physical exercise.
Constipation, especially if recurring, may determine local irritation and cause pain while passing the stools, which discourages the patient to evacuate. It is now scientifically proven that a diet low in fibres damages the good functioning of the intestine. As a matter of fact, in such case there is a delayed passing of the stools, which remain in the colon, developing harmful Bacteroides and Bifidus-type bacteria.
Instead, vegetable fibres, especially the insoluble fibres, increase the volume of the stool and consequently its speed down the colon. It is estimated that the daily average intake of vegetable fibre in adults should be around 20 grams. It must be composed of both cellulosic and non-cellulosic polysaccharides.
However, it is necessary to take into account that there are significant differences between soluble or gel fibres and insoluble or structure fibres. The first ones, derived especially from legumes and fruits, are useful but may reduce the intestinal absorption of some nutrients. The second ones, derived especially from cereals and vegetables, have a more effective action on the functioning of the colon.
Follow a high-fibre diet, especially from vegetables, fruit and whole food. Drink at least 1.5 litres of water per day. Increase physical activity.
