Blood pressure is normal when at rest is not higher than 140 mm/Hg systolic and 90 mm/Hg diastolic. It may naturally vary due to a hardening of the arteries, determining a gradual increase of the pressure with age (around 10 mm/Hg every 10 years after 40).
Blood pressure may change due to physiological causes, from physical activity to anxiety. States of anxiety causes an increase of the systolic pressure, leaving the diastolic pressure within normal values. For ex: Healthy young adult: 120/80 at rest, 170/85 under intense emotion.
